The Green Room – The Organic Hair Salon

I hadn’t had my hair cut in over a year, as you can imagine the end result of this was that all my ends were split and a different colour to the roots, purely from extended exposure to sunlight. I wanted to get a proper haircut to alleviate the stress that having really crap hair induces and conveniently The Green Room opened (or should I say re-opened) recently on Gloucester Road.

Now run by Karen and Jo, it has a very welcoming atmosphere. I turned up a little early for my appointment but I was shown to a seat and offered a drink from a vast array of tea, herbal tea and wine options and there were a box of chocolate mints on the table to dip into. After my tea, Karen ushered me toward a chair to discuss what I wanted to do with the mess on my head. I was eager to try something different and she assured me that a fringe would do the trick. I was guided to a basin to have my hair washed with organic shampoo and conditioner, which would apparently protect my hair from UV damage too (although recent weather conditions suggest this might not be necessary). The chairs by the basins were massaging chairs, with three settings; not only was my scalp being massaged but my back was getting a delicious rub too. Brilliant.

Finally I was re-seated in front of a mirror to watch Karen transform my hair. It was the first time I’d been to a hairdresser and not panicked when half my hair falls into my lap; I completely trusted her. After the cut my hair was blown dry and some spray gloss with green tea extract sprayed onto it. I returned home and my sister said; “Wow, you look like a completely different person - in a good way!” I’m not sure about that but the general consensus is that the fringe was a good move. Thank you Green Room!

I can’t say my experience was as good, the woman who cut my hair really didn’t listen to me at all. I explained that I wanted a heavy and blunt fringe and overall blunt and heavy cut and she pretty much did the opposite . She hacked loads of ‘texture’ into my hair (i.e now i have lots of short frazzled random hairs sticking out) and then when she finished she said ’see, i’ve taken the weight out of it and made it much softer’. Not at all what I asked for and exactly what I don’t like. Urgh! Giving over 25 pounds did NOT feel good. I didn’t ask for my student discount (I am a student but I didn’t have my card on me) let alone complain about my haircut- she didn’t seem like she would be understanding and I wasn’t in the mood for a row.

I am 100% positive that had you made objection and pointed out the error it could have been rectified onsite, and you would be much happier :)

I have nothing but good comments to say about the Staff at the Green Room. I am one of these women who wake up in the morning and need may hair cut their and then. They always manage to fit me in. the staff are always friendly and helpful. My hair stylist is very talented and always gives me something fun and funky i am one of the lovely women who go in and say “I odn’t know what i want” and she always comes up trump. They use excellent products.
Thank you for making feel like a gorgeous women if only for a day.

The green room advertise themselves as ‘organic’. Due to the PPD’s (para-phenylenediamine) in their hair dye I was hospitalised. This was after one of their employee’s told me their product ‘definitely did not contain them’ after I asked (as I am fully aware that I am allergic to them). I went back in to show them on my way to hospital and the owner confirmed that they in fact DO contain them. Be warned!
