Gig Review - The She Creatures

Thursday 18th December 2008 @ Thunderbolt, Bristol

Hemingway once said of writing; “start with the first true simple declarative sentence,” so here it goes…The She Creatures are the best band in Bristol. Clad in blue wigs and mixing The Ronettes with The Sonics, this gang of Venusian succubus are no bad B-movie cliché, but a salacious girl-group with a punk-rock attitude that would have even Lux Interior reaching for his testicles. In fact, if we let them, The She Creatures might just save us from the macho male sloth-rock of the tattoo brigade that dominate the local scene. So if the thought of three Poison Ivys (usually four, but tonight the group are backed on drums by one of their presumably many male peons) is just too much to bear, then grab your copy of Kerrang and head for the nearest escape pod, ‘cause your time is up.

Crash landing in Bristol sound tracked by fuzzy garage-rock riffs straight out of the first psychedelic era, the group play a short set (about 25 minutes) and comply with rock & roll’s number one rule: leave the audience wanting more. Book-ended by Hammond Organ and Theremin, lead ‘Creature Nancy Raygun fronts the charge Boudica style. Hostile takeovers have never been so much fun. They look great, they sound great, and their fazers are set to stun. Suddenly the shadow of a space-boot looms large over Bristol. Lavish praise indeed, but run your finger along the guitar neck of most male groups nowadays and you’ll find nothing but cobwebs. These girls aren’t just good, they’re vital.

The She Creatures have landed. If you dare; catch a show, buy a t-shirt and join the intergalactic band-wagon, ‘cause Venus is rising, and the Y chromosome is officially on its way to oblivion!
