Gig Review - Parkway Drive

Tuesday 27th April 2010 @ Academy, Bristol
With Support From: Despised Icon, 50 Lions, Warriors, Winds Of Plague

With a new upcoming album due to be released later this year, recently surfaced Australian hardcore band, Parkway Drive, astounded Bristol Academy last night with an aggressive and catchy set. Playing a vast majority of songs from their latest album, Horizons, including Boneyards, Idols And Anchors and, of course, Carrion, a track in which a member of the audience was invited on stage to play bass guitar to. The band also gave the extensive crowd a sneaky preview of a track from the new untitled album and didn’t forget to play several tracks from their 2004 album, Killing With A Smile.

Not letting the band’s extraordinary reputation down, Parkway Drive delivered a turbulent and brutal performance which was well waited for as their last performance in the UK since their Taste Of Chaos tour in 2006. The band seemed surprisingly shocked to have received such a big response from the crowd and expressed being five genuine guys playing music they love and having a laugh on stage and interacting with their fans.

With opening heavy-hardcore support bands Despised Icon, 50 Lions, Warriors and Winds Of Plague, these acts had a lot to live up to with Parkway Drive fans’ expectations. 50 Lions, a fellow band from Byron Bay, Melbourne, blew up the stage with inspiring tracks and vocals from Oscar McCall off their recent album, Time Is The Enemy. Hardcore punk band, Warriors, excelled and are fast becoming one of the next big things to look out for.

Coming all the way from Montreal, Quebec, Despised Icon performed one of their last shows in the UK before announcing their ultimate separation and therefore ripped up the stage to give Bristol one final brutal gig. The crowd’s reaction was incredible and ended up with a massive circle pit. The final support band, Winds Of Plague, are a unique death-core band from California. The band received a fantastic response from everyone, especially female keyboard player Alana Potocnik.

Overall the gig was a massive success and has left Bristol and the rest of the UK in anticipation for their return.
