Gig Review - Kuwarto
Saturday 31st January 2009 @ Mr Wolfs, Bristol
With Support From: Muff Said
When I arrived at Mr Wolfs the bar and dance floor were already packed and drink in hand, I navigated my way through the crowd to the front. Already the mood was good (the support band Muff Said had gone down well) and the crowd were rhythmical swaying by the time Kuwarto, fronted by the beautiful Kaz Windsor, took to the stage. Within the first few numbers, my feet have given way to an infectious movement. This is largely spawned by the tight drumming of Jago Whitehead accompanied by the rich vocals, creating an instantly recognisable danceable structure to their songs. Tied together by the bass which when being played, is as visually exciting as the sound it produces. The Tyranisaurus Rex of instruments is wielded artfully by the larger than life Phil Davis, its sound serving the trio by binding the sound together with its thick hypnotising sound.
As the set progresses, the band retained authentic elements of jazz and soul, whilst injecting a more youthful and contemporary pop feel. Many of their songs felt like early Morcheeba with their charm and warming tone. I got the feeling as the charismatic front lady spoke gently in-between songs that this was a songwriter who still has a lot to say. She purrs a; “Hey babe,” during their song Sincerely Uncertain. The dancefloor was busy and this added to the power of the bands intimate, dreamy sound.
In this venue Kuwarto rule supreme. The usual Wolf’s crew nod their well groomed heads appreciatively, most of the men mesmerised by this beautiful woman who commands attention not just by her stunning oriental looks, but by her rich voices and the lyrics she utters. After a good length set, with the material being varied enough to keep even the smokers inside for the duration, I got the feeling the band were still eager to go. All three members look tired but happy with what they had achieved so far, wearing smiles that seemed appropriate to the pace and message of their music. Keep an eye on this local talent as their youthful zest and natural ability could unlock the doors of mass appeal during 2009.
