Gig Review - Bring Me The Horizon

Thursday 30th October 2008 @ Academy, Bristol
With Support From: Deez Nutz, Dead Swans, Secret Handshake

A cold, October night; a long queue of mixed ages and styles; and a pretty empty gig which got off to a slow start! Deez Nutz had a mixed response but managed to get things moving fairly quickly. Their crowd interaction wasn’t the best but they still put on a good show to please their fans.

Next up were Dead Swans who didn’t get the feedback they deserved; they played an outstanding set but people didn’t seem to react well at all! They had a very tight connection with each other which enabled them to play their breath-taking riffs that got everybody’s head moving.

Secret Handshake just didn’t suit the gig atmosphere at all. They got some of the crowd moving but most people weren’t interested as their genre of music was too different from the rest of the line-up. All we could see was a vocalist, a drummer and a laptop which didn’t bring much enthusiasm. This brought the whole mood of the gig down to a low because very few people enjoyed them.

However, headliners Bring Me The Horizon were phenomenal! They got the whole room bouncing with their amazing energy. The audience wanted more and more so front man Oli Sykes just kept screaming! The venue was booming with life as the whole crowd jumped and kicked to every song and lyrics were sung by nearly every person whose eyes were all fixed on the band. They really know how to involve their fans when it comes to a live show. At one point in the show, the floor was split the whole way across at Oli Sykes’ request and then re-collided with the breakdown of their songs. Unfortunately, a very disappointing factor of this well played show was the fact that there was no encore despite the echo of chants around the room. Overall though, everyone appeared to be leaving the Academy with a grin on their face, happy to have had such a good time.
