CD Review - The Goodness: The Shape of Things to Come

I approached The Shape of Things to Come by The Goodness with trepidation; I’ve become increasingly wary of bands with names that begin with “The”. My mind automatically fills with thoughts of The Feeling or The Hoosiers and I can barely suppress a shudder; however, I was wrong to be so judgemental on this occasion, this album isn’t terrible. The tunes are upbeat and could get even the most sultry indie kid shaking his rump. The guitars are heavier than expected and the tunes generally more effecting than the rest of the indie-pop tat that has emerged recently. It’s obvious why The Goodness have attracted a loyal Bristol fan base in the year they’ve been together,; they offer something that we’ve been missing… catchy tunes with a bit of genuine feeling for once.
Rights/Wrongs is a great opening track reminiscent of The Smiths with fantastic warbling lead vocals I can imagine a crowd swaying and quite happily singing along; however, this is unfortunately by far the best track on the album. Although the others are good, they don’t offer anything as unique or interesting. It is a jarring juxtaposition of Rights/Wrongs and the second track, Turn it Around, which is nowhere near as special, it’s melodic and sweet, but merely mediocre. This is however a low point as the final three tracks try to raise the bar once again, though none of the tunes live up to the first track; they plod along predictably, with a little too much tish-bang and some slightly cheesy guitar riffs. The band is not too much of a cliché, and they’re a world away from what I was expecting, but they are nothing new. Though they are good at what they do.

sorry but that is the worst review I have ever read it was honoustly terrible. Just another one of those twats that sit at home commenting on myspace. I think you could of chose your word abit more carefully. As I work for Evening Post you should at least wrote about 3 pages commenting on the time they spent making there songs and on the melodies of the songs and also on the melodic rythmrd

I’m sorry James, I see you wrote this a while ago, but some things, once uttered, cannot be laid to rest.
Because you work for the evening post, somebody else, detached, who you wish to scrutinise in one paragraph, should have changed their entire work ethic? And a cd review should be 3 pages long? I question your own experience with the innumerable forms of journalism out there.

Then, you go on to say…

Contradicting yourself? I think so.
They’re just amazing, so shhh.
And what albums do you know that have 5 tracks on? I, along with the band and many other people in the world, would have called this an EP.
