CD Review - Bat For Lashes: Two Suns
Released: 06/04/09
Natasha Kahn once worked as a nursery school teacher. I’m sure the children loved her but I’m mighty glad she swapped sandpits and potato prints for a career as the fantastically named musician, Bat For Lashes. Pakistani-born Natasha is a genuine talent and definitely one for fans of Imogen Heap and Björk.
Two Suns is the second album from Bat For Lashes, guiding you through eleven tracks of powerfully exquisite electronic indie, perfectly complimented by a heavy folk influence. There isn’t a weak track out of all eleven. Throughout the duration of the album, Kahn’s haunting vocals entice you in to an irresistible, magical world. It’s near impossible not to melt into the songs themselves, as if you’re part of the inspired dreamscapes created.
The drums of the opening track Glass are bewitching; Bat For Lashes has you from here on in. The group chorus element featured in Peace Of Mind is delightful, not dull humdrum as some featured gospel elements can be. If you only listen to one song on this album, listen to Pearl’s Dream – you will not be let down.
The comparisons drawn to PJ Harvey and Kate Bush are inevitable but don’t assume that means that this is an unoriginal piece of work, as Two Suns is anything but a multi-intrumentalist/singer-songerwriter by-numbers. If songs can be radiant, these songs are radiant. I want to be Natasha Kahn’s best friend and find out where all these ideas come from.
