CD Review – The Lasting Days: October, Looking South

Released: 10.10.10

This six track compilation of nay on perfect indie harmony is a ‘kiss with a fist’ to those critics that had written off this labour-intensive group after two years in radio wilderness since their debut LP.

It only takes one listen to realise that those two years have been a necessary evil, with the hard decision to drop former drummer Ben Harrison for the crisp, understated and undeniably talented Pete Beddoes. The addition of Sarah Proudfoot’s vocals and piano acumen have also filled out the band’s delicate, yet, in its own way, deceptively powerful message.

Clear, precise melodies and engaging hooks, none more evident than in Paper To Burn, and a skilful use of quiet-loud soundscapes coupled with Richard Smiths’ vocal delivery that at once betrays a heart caving in whilst maintaining an air of inner strength. His delivery understated, soft, tinged with angst, treads the fine line between earnestness and vulnerability like a true professional belying his youth and inexperience.

Suffice it to say that The Lasting Days is head and shoulders above the countless multitudes of bands wallowing in the quick sand that sadly becomes the average situation for the majority. With a sound akin to Andrew Bird and song structures heartbreakingly reminiscent of an upbeat Nick Drake, it is difficult to find fault with this opus. A piece of work destined to ease the pain of not just the growing pains of teenagers, but also the sadness of life itself.

The depth of emotion, the skilful wordplay and painstaking instrumentals means October, Looking South demands a wider audience and here’s hoping the band get it. Make this a staple of your record collection.

Dropped? Was I dropped? I thought I left ;) But you’re right, they are sounding great with Pete behind the kit. And the new songs are going to blow you away.
