Twenty-Eleven Pipers Piping
Legs eleven, 2011. All good things come in elevens: WW1 ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 - pretty significant, eh? Apollo 11 was the first manned space shuttle to land on the moon - wowa! There are 11 players per team in a footy match – erm, OK. The M11 motorway connects London and Cambridge – you’ve lost me. Fine, 11 is a pretty insignificant number and 2011 isn’t destined for greatness or failure, it’s just another year. It simply means that the slate is clean for another 12 months to go mad in Bristol and enjoy every moment – sweet! 2011 does sound pretty bloody futuristic though right? Whatever next?! Well, 2012 obviously.

And so with the frost and snow closing on in around Bristol, we huddle round fireplaces, try to think warm thoughts and kiss goodbye to the year that was 2010. It was a year that saw such fantastic events as a long-overdue scorching Glasto, Banksy’s first film (now Oscar shortlisted), another packed Mayfest and banging Brisfest, Invisible Circus had one more rally with Carnyville 4, Bristol grew an aquarium and an 80ft TV for the World Cup and just down the road, Weston-Super-Mare got a brand spanking new pier! Long let this frivolity continue then, even in the new year when we’re all trying to cure those Christmas meat sweats and NYE hangovers. Don’t let the January blues take hold, there still plenty of excellent nights on going on in Bristol if you’re brave enough to face the outdoors and embrace 2011!

The A-Word
And so with one of the best summers in recent years drawing to an end, the deckchairs, the buckets and spades, the BBQ sets and the beach towels are once again resigned to their place at the back of the cupboard. With autumn closing in however, it’s also time to dig out the cosy slippers, the special hot chocolate mugs, the walking boots and the Sunday roast recipe books. Let’s not forget how much we enjoy this season just as much as the others! I love the crackle of crispy leaves, the brisk morning winds and the sound of rain beating on my window while I’m cosily tucked up in bed. Bliss! I’m already licking my lips for autumn and hope you are too. Just no one mention the merry C-word - then I really will get depressed.

June was warming. July was scorching. August was soaking. For all our sakes let’s hope this September is bitching so we can wave goodbye to the summer in style. August 2010 really is a must. It’s a month of musts: Must enjoy. Must experience. Must dance. Must drink. Must sing. Must party. Must live. Must take advantage of how utterly fantastic a summer city Bristol is. Every god-damn weekend there’s some sort of festival going on in some park somewhere in Bristol, and if you can’t wait for the weekends? Hell, there are gigs, clubs, galleries, theatres and cinemas galore packed with juicy entertainment. Must must must!

Ice-Cream and Shades, Buckets and Spades
If 2010 does not come with a hot, scorcher of a summer than I am officially abandoning all religion. You heard it here first. I’m fed up of cold and overcast afternoons forced to sit indoors, tired of evenings in the pub staring out of the window at a beer garden getting battered with wind and rain, and sick to the back teeth of trying to dance at a music festival in wellies, a foot deep in mud. If there is a god, he should ensure for the next couple of months that all clouds and precipitation are struck from existence, he should make eating and drinking outside during every meal and social gathering a new commandment and he should get me so hot and sweaty I’ll want to dive straight into Bristol harbour to cool off. What with a World Cup on the telly I’ll probably spend all day inside anyway but that’s not the point! We have suffered enough! Bring on the sunshine!

Summer Summer Summer! I always had faith it was going to be a scorcher! Festival season has finally arrived and after being broken in with a gloriously sunny Glastonbury, we all can’t wait to get or share of cider and sunshine fuelled fun in a field.
