Art/Stage Review - Of All The People In All The World

May 14th, 2009

Showing between Thursday 14th and Saturday 16th May 2009 @ Bridewell Island, Bristol
Showing as part of Mayfest 2009, Bristol’s festival of contemporary theatre

When a number increases outside the realm of our normal comprehension, say above the number of people in our workplace or facebook figures, it becomes increasingly difficult to visualise it and therefore to really understand it. What does 250,000 mean when it’s not the rapidly decreasing value of our town house in Totterdown? 5,000 people die in a natural disaster or 50,000 people die – what’s the difference? What does 20 million look like in comparison to 20 billion? They’re just digits, numbers on a spreadsheet, they loose all meaning.

Theatre Review - Polaris

May 9th, 2009

Showing between Tuesday 5th and Thursday 7th May 2009 @ Bristol Old Vic Studio
Showing as part of Mayfest 2009, Bristol’s festival of contemporary theatre

White-coat-clad scientists and relationship gurus alike have been telling us for years that up to 80% of human communication is nonverbal, but somehow it still seems astonishing when physical theatre – a form of drama that uses the body as a storytelling vehicle rather than the voice – can be just as, if not more, expressive, exploratory and touching than its talkative counterpart. Polaris, the creation of Czech company Adriatic, is one such breathtaking piece. A wordless pilgrimage to the harsh and eerie landscape of the Antarctic, Polaris transforms the black canvas of the sparse Old Vic Studio into an unforgiving wilderness, conjuring the Antarctic’s threatening and fragile geography through a number of charmingly performed tableaux.

Theatre Review - BRAVE

April 22nd, 2009

Showing between Tuesday 21st and Sunday 26th April 2009 @ Bristol Old Vic

The Bristol Old Vic’s young company surprised me with its unique, inspiring and emotive play BRAVE. I didn’t expect a young cast to deliver such a powerful, wise, inventive and thought-provoking performance. Like an abstract dream, I fell into the fantastical and universal experiences displayed in BRAVE.

It’s an astounding play, which has been brilliantly directed and explored by all involved. The audience was brought from laughing one moment to silence in the next. For various reasons we look to forget our childhood: the kiss chase, birthdays, divorce, illness, abuse and death. But for one night you get to re-live the highs and lows of childhood, and life. For myself, a lot of these memories on stage were my memories.
