Green Tracks, an independent initiative which aims to promote the social awareness and use of urban greenways, with the support of Sustrans, Life Cycle UK, Bristol City Council and Bristol Clean & Green, has launched a photography competition to celebrate the Bristol & Bath Railway Path.

The news has come as a shock to some but Bristol has been quietly building momentum over the last few years, hoarding accolade after accolade for its sustainability and green credentials, cultural prowess, urban ingenuity and high quality of life. The Tobacco Factory is one of the few survivals from the great Imperial Tobacco site on Raleigh Road, Ashton, Bristol. It was saved from demolition by Bristol architect George Ferguson who has turned it into a model of urban regeneration. It is now a multi-use building housing a cafe/bar, an oriental bistro, creative industry work spaces, work loft apartments, animation and performing arts schools, a dance studio and one of the most exciting small theatre venues in the country.

And what a sight for sore, shopping-deprived eyes it is: There are over 120 shops including 25 flagship stores as well as a humungous 13 screen luxury cinema, complete with lounging sofas and a posh restaurant, slap bang in the heart of the city. Fashionistas can get their nails done while sipping pink champagne at Harvey Nichol’s while foodies can salivate over celeb chef, Raymond Du Blanc’s seasonal offerings at Brasserie Blanc. But for all the glamour, the luxury and the achingly-cool design, this new, unfamiliar skyline is causing something of an identity crisis for the city and its inhabitants.
