Destination? Brizzzzle!

April 7th, 2009

Thinking of getting away from it all and visiting a somewhere special for Easter? A weekend in Washington DC perhaps? A visit to Vienna? Maybe go frolicking in Fes? Or how about staying right here in Bristol? With over 800,000 cities to choose from around the world, DK Eyewitness Travel, the best-selling guidebook publisher, has chosen Bristol, yes, our Bristol, as one of their must-see top 10 cities in the world that must be visited in 2009!

The news has come as a shock to some but Bristol has been quietly building momentum over the last few years, hoarding accolade after accolade for its sustainability and green credentials, cultural prowess, urban ingenuity and high quality of life. DK Eyewitness in its guidebook particularly mentioned Bristol’s Georgian architecture and historical attractions, its world class art and media centres, the impressive shopping facilities, its ‘green’ appeal, our charming neighbourhoods and pockets of individual charm and Bristol’s varied character and cultural offer.

Tobacco Factory Film

March 5th, 2009

The Tobacco Factory is one of the few survivals from the great Imperial Tobacco site on Raleigh Road, Ashton, Bristol. It was saved from demolition by Bristol architect George Ferguson who has turned it into a model of urban regeneration. It is now a multi-use building housing a cafe/bar, an oriental bistro, creative industry work spaces, work loft apartments, animation and performing arts schools, a dance studio and one of the most exciting small theatre venues in the country.

Stomping The Streets – Bristol’s Christmas Lights

December 2nd, 2008

Have you ever noticed how most of Christmas’s best things are luminous? The dazzle of snow, the glow of a log fire, the sparkle of tinsel, and - of course - Christmas lights, and Bristol has no shortage of those: Clifton’s Winter Wonderland - the arcade glittering with fairy-lit trees; in Bristol Zoo, fairy-light monkeys clamber above the real menagerie; the lit-up homes in Southmead that would put a smile on even Ebeneezer’s Scrooge’s face; and St Nicholas Market and the Christmas Steps were made for this season – if it wasn’t for the fake snow, it would be like walking into a Dickensian grotto.

Stomping The Streets - Roll up; roll up, the Circus is coming…

November 7th, 2008

Well actually it’s already here but if you were hoping for tigers, elephants and clowns, you may be disappointed. Yes, after four long years of builders’ bums, cement dust and around £500 million, Cabot Circus has finally opened its doors to the public!

And what a sight for sore, shopping-deprived eyes it is: There are over 120 shops including 25 flagship stores as well as a humungous 13 screen luxury cinema, complete with lounging sofas and a posh restaurant, slap bang in the heart of the city. Fashionistas can get their nails done while sipping pink champagne at Harvey Nichol’s while foodies can salivate over celeb chef, Raymond Du Blanc’s seasonal offerings at Brasserie Blanc. But for all the glamour, the luxury and the achingly-cool design, this new, unfamiliar skyline is causing something of an identity crisis for the city and its inhabitants.

Stomping The Streets - Guide to all the Areas of Bristol 2008

October 1st, 2008

Welcome to a regular SY feature which we revel in calling Stomping The Streets. Each month we get on our walking shoes or bicycle clips and go out and explore the wonderful areas of Bristol, investigating what makes a certain spot so special. STS features can range from whole districts of the city, down to individual streets or just a bridge. There’s a whole lot to love!

For our student issue, we’ve got an overview of everything you need to know about the various areas of Bristol. The cities a damn large and interesting place so we’ve had to be pretty broad with the geographical paintbrush but once you’ve acclimatised yourself with these main areas, you too will be able to differentiate and understand the differences between Montpelier and St Werburghs, or Southville and Bedminster. For the time being however, thumb through this guide and go get stomping yourself!
