Gilly Woo Design

August 5th, 2008

Everyone wants to exude glamour from time to time; people like wearing beautiful clothes and feeling fabulous and even in a city as seemingly scruffy as Bristol there lies a beautiful and elegant undercurrent simply desperate to burst free. In Suit Yourself’s opinion, there is no better person placed to dress the ever stylish people of this city than the beautiful and gifted Gilly Woo.

Sweet Tooth? = Sweet Shop!

August 5th, 2008

Sooo where can you spoil yourself in Bristol for under a fiver? Well for the sweet toothed out there I beckon you to St Nicholas covered market. Situated off Corn Street in town, I discovered this badly kept secret after a morning spent exploring the market one Saturday. The urge came on strongly for some kind of pick me up and this is what I stumbled upon.

Restaurant Review - The Firehouse Rotisserie

August 5th, 2008

When pounding the city it’s imperative to get your fuel hole filled or it’s trouble after a few vodkas, resulting in an untimely retreat home, all voiceless and forgettable. To counter an early evening body rebellion, scout-out a good eatery and don the nosebag. Too many burger vans have left me ‘a half cooked meal revisited’, bent double and shaking my fist at the sky. To stop this nonsense acquaint yourself with one of Bristol’s better eateries. My advice if you’re stalking Harbourside, insinuate your body amongst the munchers at The Firehouse Rotisserie.

Bristol Shakespeare Festival 2008

June 30th, 2008

A couple of months ago saw the city of Bristol give itself over to the fantastic festival of contemporary theatre - Mayfest, and this summer, Bristol theatre fans are being treated to another festival but of a very different kind.

The Bristol Shakespeare Festival has been going and growing since 2004, showcasing performances across Bristol every summer between May and August and it has now become the largest open-air Shakespeare festival found anywhere in the UK. 2008 sees the festival’s largest and most ambitions schedule yet with 10 shows in various, exciting venues across the city. What better way to spend a sunny, summer afternoon then down in Queen’s Square or in Ashton Court with a picnic, drinks and friends watching a superb retellings of our favourite bards work?

What’s Your Beef? - SY’s Guide To A Ruddy Good Summer BBQ

June 30th, 2008

Succulent, hand-reared, corn fed chicken with a spicy tikka marinade; crisp, fresh iceberg-lettuce with cherry vine tomatoes and a herb vinaigrette; ice-cold Pinot Grigio grown in the Italian lakes…. This is not just a barbeque, this is an overindulgence. Listen up for some top tips on how to spoil yourself this summer and achieve the ultimate BBQ:

Bristol is simply swarming with hidden treasures where you can find locally sourced meat, flavour full salads and scrumptious side dishes, or all the ingredients to make your own, depending on how advanced one’s culinary skills are. Although you could cheat and buy everything from supermarkets or M&S, my advice would be to take advantage of some of the great produce that’s right on our doorstep.

Artspace Lifespace Update

June 30th, 2008

Since the Pro Cathedral project finished last December, Artspace Lifespace have been busy negotiating and putting plans together for their biggest undertaking to date. Working closely with developers Urban Splash, the group have now secured the old city centre fire/police station formerly known as Bridewell and renamed it ‘The Island’. As ever Artspace Lifespace hopes to demonstrate how important it is that buildings in our community are used in a positive, if not necessarily traditional way; demonstrating the value of transforming derelict buildings in to vibrant spaces.

The Rummer

May 23rd, 2008

An individual’s choice of drink resides close to their heart, or closer still, to an anticipatory and ‘knowing’ liver. My ‘preference’ is the much overlooked Moscow Mule, once punted-out club style in orange plastic bottles. A bang-on serving would constitute a regulatory 2oz Vodka, 2oz lime juice and 8oz ginger beer blend; enough to hit crikey nails through a standard issue WWII Russian helmet. But where to secure a Moscow Mule worthy of distinction? Look no further than the poshed-up Rummer Hotel.

Restaurant Review - St Werburghs City Farm Café

May 20th, 2008

I had been meaning to sample the local delights of the St Werburghs café for some time and so one Saturday morning with a steaming hangover I made my way through the allotments, said hello to the piggies, then promptly ate a delicious bacon sandwich. A good bacon sandwich in thick, wholemeal bread, smothered with a dollop of ketchup is the best cure after a night of debauchery. A little side salad keeps me healthy but this wasn’t enough for my seemingly empty stomach. Along came a Welsh, or rather, Werburghs rarebit. Now, this was not quite as good as the previous dish, but nevertheless, it satisfied my hunger. A little on the eggy side made it quite sickly to the taste but I enjoyed the course grain mustard which was mixed in with the cheese and egg. Finally, all washed down with a hot mug of earl grey tea I was able to slowly regained my normal sense of self and deliberated the idea of a pint of beer at the nearby Farm pub. Oh dear!

Local Designer - Sabine Lang

April 7th, 2008

I never fail to be pleasantly surprised by the talent and creativeness that can be found in Bristol. The city certainly does impress in every little corner.

Behind the door of an every day flat in Montpelier, Sabine Lang is creating some of the most unusual and unique jewellery I have ever seen. Using pure ingredients to create the illusion of bubbles, Sabine is giving traditional jewellery styles a very modern twist.
