SY’s Soggy Summer Guide

July 20th, 2009

Summer is nearly here - the season for ice-cream vans and holding hands, flip-flops and frisbees, sorbets and sunburn, beer gardens and barbeques. But chances are that the summer of 2009 is going to be another complete and utter washout and Vitamin D intake is going to be at an all time low. Therefore, here at SY we’ve helpfully compiled our guide to the best ways for you to enjoy those warm but rainy days and embrace the soggy summer!

- Put on a wetsuit and pretend it’s sunny.

- Turn up the heating in your house, don’t consume any liquid at all for 4 days and then run outside into the rain with your head back and mouth wide open; you’ll get a whole new appreciation for precipitation!

Making the Most of Summer

July 7th, 2009

As we slowly start to ease out of the darkest days of winter, the thought on many people’s minds is; “What shall I do this summer?” For the fortunate, a couple of weeks basking in the south of France’s best sunlight or a road trip down the Californian coast might be a reality, but for those of us who are trying to keep our heads above water during this nasty credit crunch, staying at home is the only option. One of the biggest worries about summer in England is that we won’t see enough sunshine to even be able to distinguish the season, let alone crack out the ice-creams and sun lotion. But if you’re still reeling from 2008’s washout and thoughts of the summer ahead are anything but glamorous, it can still be fun, worthwhile and memorable. Whether you’re out of pocket or out in the rain, the important thing is to stay positive and make the most of summer – whatever form the summer might take.

Festival Review - UpFest ‘09: The Urban Paint Festival

June 9th, 2009

Saturday 6th June 2009 @ Tobacco Factory, Grain Barge, The Garage, Bridewell Island, Try Again Pub, View Art Gallery and everywhere in between, Bristol

When you first arrive at the Tobacco Factory (UpFest’s main and focus venue) and make your way outside to the beer garden and car park, the first thing that hits you is the sheer amount of stuff going on. There were so so so so so many artists all together there, all in their element going at the walls, boards, floors, cars, canvas and hexagon towers ‘hammer and tong’ (or is that ‘can and brush’) you had trouble trying to take it all in! UpFest ‘09 was a true celebration of everything urban art.

Spring Cleaning

April 13th, 2009

Now that Spring has officially kicked-off, this is the perfect time to sort out your house. The easiest bit of Spring Cleaning you can do which will improve your life no end is getting rid of all the clutter you’ve been hoarding over the last few years. Electrical items particularly we find emotionally difficult to part with but you can ensure they find a happy home by recycling them as part of your Spring Clean!

Research shows that on average we each have at least 3 unused electrical items cluttering up our houses. That’s things like old kettles, mobile phones, computers, electric toys, stereos, digital watches, hairdryers, electric toothbrushes, TVs and are you really ever going to use that sandwich-toaster again?

Bristol Snowy Scenes

February 24th, 2009

It was mid-February – that cold, grey, miserable time of year. Not wanting to go bankrupt by turning up the heating to the Saharan levels we deserved, we decided to brace ourselves against the cold by instead sleeping with a triple duvet-blanket combo in bed and covering every inch of skin just to go outside became a necessary habit.
