SY Meets…The Blast (Shit The Bed)

May 25th, 2010

As The Blast prepares to celebrate its fourth birthday with their biggest Shit The Bed club night yet, we catch up with The Bandit to see how things are shaping up for the party and to see how he feels about putting crude phrases on chests around the world.

1) Hi, how the devil are you?
Very well thanks.

2) Shit The Bed 14 is coming up next month and it’s The Blast’s fourth birthday. Can you tell us a little bit about what’s in store?
Pure epicness! It’s going to be our biggest STB yet. The extra warehouse has given us a lot of freedom to bring in some new acts, Mad Professor Live is going to be insane and we always love a Kenny Ken Jungle set. Also looking forward to see a lot of our regular party people; Redlight has been killing it over the last 3 months!

Gig Review - LCD Soundsystem

May 4th, 2010

Sunday 2nd May 2010 @ Academy, Bristol
With Support From: Yacht

The first bank holiday weekend in May and lets face it, whoever doesn’t have work on Monday is going out on Sunday night! This explains why the Academy is packed to the rafters for LCD Soundsystem. Rumours have been rife that this may be the final album and tour for LCD so this could be a pretty interesting gig.

The atmosphere was strangely tense with some people already incredibly drunk and raucous from the get go. The tour support was provided by Yacht, an American dance music collective that apparently constantly changes whilst the main song writer (along with some crazy dance moves) remains the same. They seem to whip parts of the crowd into a frenzy with some very 80’s sounding electro pop that would make Yazoo proud.

2 Years of Artspace Lifespace At Bridewell Island

April 27th, 2010

The Old Firestation – Bridewell Island – The Island – Whatever you call it, the red windowed beauty of a building on Silver Street in the very heart of town has truly come to life over the past 20-odd months and has provided Bristol with more alternative culture and nights to remember than we could have ever dreamt of.

On Thursday last week, Suit Yourself Magazine was lucky enough to go and witness the opening night of Plan B’s UK tour in support of new album, The Defamation Of Strickland Banks. After the show we met up with Cassell, long time collaborator, producer and drummer with Plan B’s Ben Drew as well as other artists including The Streets.

CD Review – Ikonika: Contact, Love, Want, Have

April 24th, 2010

Released: 06/04/10

In recent years, dubstep seems to have begun to fall into two distinct categories. The wobble centric club bangers produced by the likes of Skream and Rusko et al. and those taking a more measured approach and exploring the scope for experimentation within the genre. This debut release from Sara Abel- Hamid, aka Ikonika, definitely falls into the latter category.

Club Review - Just Jack: Beat Boutique

November 2nd, 2009

Saturday 31st October 2009 @ Motion, Bristol

It seems Halloween is taken a lot more seriously these days and entering Motion’s Just Jack Beat Boutique, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d walked onto the set of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Ghastly ghouls, zombie nurses and psycho surgeons are aplenty and it’s a new experience to be on the dance floor alongside glow-in-the-dark skeletons and bloodied goth-vampires.

Club Review - Rusko

October 19th, 2009

Thursday 15th October 2009 @ Lab, Bristol

As one of the biggest names in dubstep and quite possibly my favourite artist, Rusko at the Lab (formerly the Arc Bar), hosted by Shoestring, was always going to be a brilliant night out for Bristol’s dubstep fans. Rusko wasn’t the only big draw to the event; Chasing Shadows, Bristol’s local dubstep talent, supported the artist with an incredible warm-up set that certainly hyped up the headline act. Their combination of rap and dubstep beats was a draw to the crowd that packed the small space from the stage all the way back to bar and turned the club into gridlock for the middle stages of the night.

Gig/Club Review - Groove Armada

October 13th, 2009

Friday 9th October 2009 @ Motion, Bristol

There is no mistaking Motion’s place on the Bristol club scene. Since its opening to the odd club night over 3 years ago, Motion has grown exponentially to be, by far, the biggest and most influential club Bristol has to boast about. It ticks all the underground scene boxes, all the kids want to party there and all out-of-towners want to feel like they are buying into the Skins-esk cool we have somehow adopted recently. Needless to say the club is always busy and tonight was going to be no exception.
