The more the Chief Ape told us we were due to participate in a highly dangerous activity, the more and more I wanted to retreat back to the extremely cosy pub we had managed to pass several times with the crazy diversion on route to the Go Ape site. A diversion which had been set up, we assume, by a few jokers in the Forest of Dean, meaning we traveled in convoy twice around the same broken down road, in a sat-nav twilight zone, desperately trying to beat the bad weather to the site. After setting off so early and excited I had never thought for a second that fear would grip me the minute we set foot in the forest!

The 2007/08 season has been a wild time for football in the city of Bristol. Not long ago the sporting public at large new more about football in Hong Kong than could even tell you what colour Bristol City or Bristol Rovers play in. This season however has permanently etched footballing Bristol onto the mind of the nation.

As the April snow-showers fall confoundedly around us, you may have noticed the streets perforated with folk in snowboard jackets? These are most probably Westbeach and been purchased from The Store on Park Street, for a complete bargain before it’s doors closed after three years of trade, in their massive closing down sale!

If you go down to some of the woodlands located around the Bristol and South West on a Sunday, you might get a big surprise - and it’s not a picnic. Out on the hills and in the ancient woodlands dotted across the South West (and in other locales too) a new breed of board rider is making use of the great outdoors.

An athletic young gentleman has a strolling run up of only a couple of paces and without blinking, throws his body several feet into the air in a sort of double-flip-somersault-kick. My jaw hits the floor. Behind him, his friend manages to pull off a sort of triple-spin-forward-flip in what I’m later told is a ‘Snapuswipe’ to the polite applause and odd “woop!” of the crowd. It can only be ‘Tricking’.

‘Unibreakers Bristol’ was originally set up for students from Bristol and UWE and is now a city wide society open to the public. Anyone can come along and try their hand (or feet, knees, head…) at breaking. They run official classes as well as training and around thirty people currently attend the Saturday lessons, taught by Champloo at the dance studio in Bristol Student Union. Lessons cost a mere four pounds, and you don’t have to have any previous experience to attend, just enthusiasm!

Honiton (South East Devon) to Conway (North Wales)

I had already cycled almost 200 miles, and as I sat guzzling my juicy fish and chips whilst steaming myself some broccoli on my stove, I felt completely at peace and decided there and then I was in the midst of experiencing the affects of the best decision I had ever made…Surrounded by a glorious garden of flowers on a small patch of lawn probably just big enough to squeeze another tent on, in the shadows of the village church and the forested hills that rose beyond its spire, my tent was pitched in the back garden of a lady who I reckon could claim to own the smallest camp site in world!

Before you delve in and learn about my venture through a part of the UK, you should be aware of the whys and wherefores of the trip: I was hoping that solitary riding in beautiful, serene countryside would provide the tonic to ease the pain of a broken heart, and having spent 10 weeks of the summer holidays in BT Faults Dept, I wanted some adventure!

The problem with saying that you will do something is that there comes a time when you actually have to do it. This time becomes especially note worthy when you have bragged that you’ll do that something in the pub, to your mates and on facebook ad nausem. For me, that something is an adventure race. Safe behind a computer screen, this seemed like a brilliant idea – join three mates and run, kayak and mountain bike over some lovely English countryside. Getting fit was not something I thought about too much as I forward the link to two friends with the subject ‘BRILLIANT PROJECT – LETS DO IT’, and sat back thinking that I had really, well done it.
