Gilly Woo

September 1st, 2010

My name is Gilly and I’m a designer, dressmaker and stylist based in Bristol in the UK. I design and make bespoke finery: bridal gowns, occasion wear and corsets, I style photo shoots, fashion shows, performers and individuals and I party pretty hard too. I’m 30, I’m single and I live with a gay man, a papier mache flamingo and a lot of hats in a little flat in Cotham.

One Lustful Summer

August 5th, 2010

As the sun decides to debut in an English summer, the city sheds it’s stale and pessimistic cocoon of winter coats and American apparel layers to emerge in true English fashion, practically naked to the sun. The streets are suddenly bustling with a blend of tropical prints and pink sunburnt skin. Crinkled sun hats emerge from dusty cupboards and perch on fresh blue rinses as creased mahogany cleavages clash with ‘on trend’ bright colours. Children dance bare bummed on the hot stone and cool in the city fountain while grumpy mothers bathe in the much-anticipated heat, shaking their heads at the exposed toned stomachs of passers by.

Avalaan: Bristol’s Newest Lifestyle Brand

June 8th, 2010

‘Young’ and ‘dynamic’ are buzzwords too often associated with any brand that’s heard of Banksy or a kickflip, but for the painfully cool Avalaan, they’ve never been more applicable.

Nestled amongst the independent community of Gloucester Road, Avalaan’s urban sportswear plunges you deep into a lo-slung world of hip-hop, street art and all things skate and snow. Sweet sneaks are on sale next to ski goggles and cans of spray paint, and the walls burst with the work of local graffiti artists. And then there’s the rainbow collection of t-shirts, scarves and hoodies.

UWE Fashion and Fashion Textiles 2010 Graduate Showcase Catwalk

Saturday 22nd May 2010 @ The Passenger Shed, Bristol

I was really excited at the prospect of attending UWE’s graduate fashion showcase, with past students having gone onto work in the industry for renowned designers such as Christopher Kane, Hussein Chalayan and Vivienne Westwood. This year’s students have worked with names such as Marc Jacobs, Ann Demeulemeester and Alexander McQueen. I expected great things, and this showcase didn¹t disappoint. The quality and clarity of the collections made it hard for me to believe that as I was watched models strutting their stuff, they were wearing garments designed and cut by graduating students.

Gothic Glamour

February 2nd, 2010

Stepping out of your nightmares and creating things of dreams, beauty is exploring the dark side this season inspired by the fatal allure that is The Vampire proving that gothic glamour is back with a futuristic twist.

As seen at Zac Posen, it’s all about a flawless almost translucent base but it must be undetectable. Vamp it up as seen at Rodarte and Chloe with contouring giving an instant edge to your look. Take a soft angled brush and flutter a sculpting powder from your temples right along the dent of your cheekbone, followed by a soft highlighter swept along the top to accentuate this sculpturesque look.

A Day in the Life of a Model Agency Owner: Clare @ Gingersnap

January 26th, 2010

8.30am - I get into work and fire up all the computers in the office for the staff, then make a cup of coffee to wake up!

9am - The office meeting. The 3 bookers catch up about the jobs they are dealing with so that everyone knows what’s going on around the desk. A booker needs to be aware of all the modelling jobs happening in the agency. Clients have emailed perhaps from the night before wanting lists of models to be put forward for up and coming jobs. The jobs have to be prioritised along with emails that have to be dealt with. The phone starts to ring about now; it could be models wanting directions to jobs, clients needing models yesterday or potential models needing information about joining the agency.
