Gig Review - The Mysto Juniors

December 14th, 2010

Wednesday 8th December 2010 @ The Louisiana, Bristol

Everything falls apart in an English winter, and audience participation proves to be no exception; however the band tonight seems unperturbed and crack on with the show. At first it seems The Mysto Juniors are cleverly cultivating an adverb-elusive atmosphere with their front man going all “Thom Yorke” in a disturbing fashion but his haunting howling soon went too far and mingled with bizarre cackling. Once this pseudo-atmospheric art-house fanny around was over, the band picked up some momentum and it was a breath of fresh air to feel some real talent coming from the stage.

Stage Review - Swallows And Amazons

December 12th, 2010

Wednesday 1st December 2010 until Saturday 15th January 2011 @ Bristol Old Vic, Bristol

I never read Swallows And Amazons as a child. Growing up as I did on a dense diet of vivacious adventure stories however, it seems incredible that I could have missed such a classic childhood text, Arthur Ransome’s famous book being universally popular since its first publication in 1930. This Christmas at the Bristol Old Vic the story has been given renewed energy as it is reborn for the stage and I am delighted to report that the life, excitement, beauty and sheer good fun of the source has transferred superbly.

Creative File: Borai, Producer and DJ

December 10th, 2010

Creative File goes behind-the-scenes to talk with Bristol creatives in their own working space. This time, Borai steps up. Also known as Boris English, this cat has been a constant in Bristol bass music for more than a decade. Whether it’s dub, funky, grime, dancehall, house, juke or all the steps - Borai is always on point.

So what do you do exactly?
I spend most of my time writing music (lucky me…!) at home in my studio, or round someone else’s house/studio if I’m working on a collaboration. I’ve recently been delving into mastering and dubplate cutting, helping out a friend who runs a small operation in Bristol, Dub Studio, and in return am being taught the finer points of the so called “Black Art”. Other than that I go to clubs/gigs that interest me and try to keep up with the housework!

Stage Review - Jason And Medea

December 3rd, 2010

Sunday 24th until Wednesday 27th November 2010 @ Bristol Old Vic, Bristol

The tragic story of Jason And Medea is a textbook piece of Greek mythology. It is a tale of love and hate with a strong current of power and inequality waving about throughout. Transposing this to the stage is an ambitious task for any theatre company let alone giving the myth a new slant, script and style. Cue the Bristol Old Vic Young Company present their audience with a Jason and Medea like no other.

Gig Review - The Metiers

November 29th, 2010

Friday 26th November 2010 @ The Greenbank, Bristol

Sometimes you think why the hell did I venture out on a freezing cold, snowy winters evening, and sometimes you think I’m really glad I did. And it’s a case of the latter tonight with Bristol-based female-fronted four-piece, The Metiers.

Gig Review - Vessels

November 22nd, 2010

Thursday 18th November 2010 @ The Bierkeller, Bristol
With Support From: Austere, Hello Lazarus, Stuart Warwick

Vessels waits patiently like a Zen master before blowing our minds. Austere, however lucked out they may have been when the set times were handed out, gave a competent and intentionally eerie atmospheric warm-up to a gig pregnant with expectation. Often described as prog-rock, at a push the mute collection of hirsute Hammets’ sound was reminiscent of an early Metallica with Fade To Black springing to mind. However, their set was more memorable for its lack of purpose (apart from that of setting a brooding atmosphere) than individuality. Not many bands have the balls to place talent before popularity, and fewer still can make it work.
