Kev The Poet presents: Wasted Talent

Dedicated to Thomas Chatterton

Chatterton, the boy genius, deserves more than praise and credit
Divinely inspired, you don’t have to be alive to get it.

Perhaps Bristol has always been full of creative people,
From Access to Music to Circomedia - I’ve found no equal.

I grew up in London where they come from far and wide to compete.
Those in Bristol tend to collaborate - the vibration here’s unique.

Allegedly voted Britain’s smileyest city,
Concrete Village on a river full of the silly and witty.

Regardless of whether or not I’m called to the rivers
West country shivers gives me the chills.

Too many free parties with too many people on too many pills.
Loving the bike rides, but too many hills!

The Cadbury is my living room,The Chelsea my lounge.
I was couch surfing through poverty but never a scrounge!

In St Nicks Market - I’ll purchase a crystal
And chat to the lightworkers attracted to Bristol

About how inspiring it is to work with children
And on the phattest beats I’m rapping on I reference Thomas Chatterton

The way I’ve been known to quote William Blakes speech on breakbeats.
Visions of sacred lakes where my favourite Romantic Poets take me.

Champion the under-God, over-stand system busting dogma defiers
With no time for hypocrites and established liars.

One Small Axe can cut the bigot-tree down today.
I’ll not mourn it like the Minstrels Roundelay.

Chatterton, the boy genius, deserves more than praise and credit
Divinely inspired, you don’t have to be alive to get it.

In the 1700s he lived and died,
Some call him a fraud, some say he lied.

He wrote works as if they were written in the 15th Century
Even in Ye Old English, but they worked it out eventually.

The boy genius started when he was 11, see?
But they didn’t credit him until after he died, is this what they’re telling me?

In order to forger a victim must exist
But they call him a forger and a fraud, in my opinion that takes the… mick.

He forged a fictional character that he created,
No victim there apart from the establishment that happily ate it,

Swallowed it and fell for it hook line and sinker.
Now they still ignore his influence, oh what a stinker!

The greatest Romantic poets like Coleridge and Keats
Were inspired by Thomas the blaggers poetic treats.

Chatterton, the boy genius, to know what I mean
Know he achieved all this before he died aged Seventeen.

Chatterton, the boy genius, committed suicide.
He never felt critical acclaim before he died.

Chatterton, the boy genius, deserves more than praise and credit
Divinely inspired, you don’t have to be alive to get it.

Love, gratitude and appreciation
